The Arches

Three rooms of a townhouse, renovated on one principle: soft against hard.

Everything curved is deliberate. Arched doorways, rounded boucle sofas, soft pendant lighting. And everything it sits against is deliberately not: a monolithic stone island, statement black cabinetry, Crittall-style windows and doors in black steel.

The townhouse does the rest. Tall ceilings and original mouldings frame the new work, the steel glazing keeps the garden views and the old proportions in sight, and the snug turns it all down in the evenings: a stone fireplace, a patinated wall, one deep sofa. Contemporary where it counts, respectful everywhere else.
